VISIONGRAM presented at IBSA Judo Grand Prix Special booth set up at the venue

On December 3, 2023, the Japan Blind Judo Federation held a press conference for the IBSA Judo Grand Prix 2023 Tokyo, a world tournament for blind judo and announced that Japan’s national blind judo team adopt VISIONGRAM. Yusuke Hatsuse, vice president of the Japan Blind Judo Federation, commented "Visualizing how athletes see makes it easier for them to receive instruction," and that he hopes for not only the spread and development of blind judo, but also the further public understanding of visual disability. Yujiro Seto, a member of Japan’s national blind judo team in the J2 men's 73kg weight class, said "Every visually impaired person is often asked about his or her vision, but it’s difficult to explain it in words. By just showing my VISIONGRAM, people can understand how I see.”.

During the tournament from December 4 to 5, a special VISIONGRAM booth was set up at the venue of Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, where people could experience how blind judo players see through smartphones and monitors. Many people including audience, athletes' families, and overseas teams experienced VISIONGRAM. While the Japanese national team players showed remarkable results, the booth was also crowded with visitors excited to experience a view of the players they had never seen before.

I think this is a very innovative project to visually express the way we see, which is difficult to express in words. It is easy to understand as a tool for communicating one’s way of seeing. It also allowed me to look at my own way of seeing objectively, and the difference from the way I perceive made me realize how interesting human vision is.

I participated in VISIONGRAM because I thought it was an interesting never-been-done project. I would be happy if people could get a feeling of how I see the world.

I often explain my vision when I ask for support or meet new people, but since my disability is congenital, I am unable to compare my vision with others which leads to inadequate explanation. VISIONGRAM is easy to explain and will be a tool to deepen mutual understanding among people with or without disabilities. I would be very happy if it becomes an opportunity for people to learn the various types of low vision in the future!

For many times in my life, I thought to myself "I am not living in the dark”. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of reactions will be generated by this project that visualizes how I, who cannot see, see the world.
